this was beautiful to read.

i didn’t know much about the birch tree, neither its properties or its role as a pioneer species after the ice age ended.

your creations with the birch tree are especially lovely, i loved the baskets. i hope i can learn how to do this sometime.

i have greatly enjoyed this series because of all i’ve learn, sense gating, ecological perception…i want to notice more things. reading you makes me feel hopeful that i can.

I think you are quite open and notice many of the small or unnoticed things, Eugenia, your poetry and writings tell me so. I’ve always admired poets for the way you can weave metaphor and experience into truths that speak to the heart and soul. You’re writing is so soulful! I feel like I have much to learn from you. I think I just simply gave some science-y terms for what you already do innately.

If you ever have questions about birch Basketry, please never hesitate to send me a message, ask away!.I would love to share this craft.

Thank you for your thoughtful reflections and supporting my writing, it means a lot. <3 -Lena

thank you Lena, it was a beautiful, expansive, and soothing read. appreciate you for sharing your story with birch with us.

also reminds me of what Mary Oliver says “attention is the beginning of devotion”. when we pay attention to things, they become alive, and so do we. we could form a relationship that makes both of our existence richer than before. simple but powerful practice worth every moderner learning to cultivate again for a good life.

Thank you for reading and reflecting Freya. I’m glad it felt soothing. Oh I love Mary Oliver, it’s about time I do a deep dive into her practice, this quote is the essay in a nutshell haha leave it to a poet to be so concise ❤️ thanks for sharing that with me

"The way we attend builds soil for what grows in us." This is lovely, and so helpful in (re)contextualising attention as a bodily practice, undertaken along with other bodies and as a way to orient ourselves towards these others. Over the years I've been growing closer to birches, which surround me these days in place of the beeches of my childhood. Your writing about these beautiful trees stirs something that is growing deep in me, and it has given me much to contemplate and learn from. Thank you, Lena.

Suzanne, I am grateful for your support and your kind words. I really love what you post and thank you for including my essay in your reading garden. Birch is a wonderful tree, I do not know beeches, but will be keen to connect, whisper a greeting to them and a hello to you as well. I am so glad to know that we share a deep love for these trees, and have in turn been loved deeply by them as well. I hope I get to hear what they’ve been saying to you. Take care,
